Hearts vs Benfica Prediction 13 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Hearts and Benfica will meet in the second leg of the third qualifying round of the Europa League at Tynecastle Park. After the first match, the suspense in this tie has all but disappeared: the Lisbon side demolished their opponents 6:1 and built an advantage that will, let's be honest, be impossible to overturn. The Scottish side are left to fight for a dignified end to the tie before dropping into the third-tier continental competition. And there are positive signs: Hearts returned to the national league with a big win, so psychologically Wouter Vrancken's team goes into the second leg in a much better state than one might have expected.

    Head-to-Head

📊 In Lisbon, the Portuguese side won 6:1, and the difference in class was evident almost immediately. Rafa Silva opened the scoring as early as the third minute, Tomas Araujo extended the lead on the 23rd, and Vangelis Pavlidis converted a penalty before the break. In the second half, Gianluca Prestianni, John Duran and Andreas Schjelderup completed the rout.

🔗 Statistically, Benfica also had full control of the match: 67% possession, 11 shots on target against two for Hearts, and six corners against two also in their favour. Now the situation is fundamentally different. While hope and chances remain, Hearts need to take risks. Benfica can afford a significantly more pragmatic approach. With a five-goal advantage, the Portuguese have absolutely no need to play at full speed.

    Heart of Midlothian Team Overview

Hearts are having a very difficult start to the season, but the 4-0 demolition of Dundee United last weekend shifted the mood around the club somewhat. At Tynecastle the hosts were fully in control, and goals from Tom Renou and Calvin Miller in the first half settled the contest well before the final whistle. The win was the first for Hearts this season and in particular for their new manager Wouter Vrancken, for whom it was an important response after a tough start.

In the first match in Lisbon, the Scots suffered badly from a poor opening to the first half. Benfica scored in the third minute and comfortably controlled the space between the lines. After the break Hearts looked noticeably bolder and managed to score. The team stopped fearing their opponents and began moving the ball forward more actively, which caused Benfica some problems. Renou took advantage of one of those moments to score Hearts' only goal.

The Scots no longer need to be cautious. The tie is effectively lost, so Vrancken can afford a fully attacking approach. That increases the likelihood of both teams scoring, but at the same time leaves space for Benfica's quick transitions.

The home ground in Edinburgh also works in the hosts' favour. At Tynecastle Park Hearts are capable of playing considerably more boldly than they did in Portugal, and the support of the crowd should help the team put in an active first half. However, changing the nature of the tie entirely will be extremely difficult. Even if Hearts perform better than in the first leg, Benfica's five-goal advantage gives the visitors an enormous cushion.

    Benfica Lisbon Team Overview

Benfica go into the second leg in a near-perfect position. Marco Silva's side can now build their game entirely around the result. The Portuguese don't need to open up or push forward in numbers - it's enough to calmly control the match and not let Hearts score early.

The Eagles have the option to rotate and manage the workload. With a lead like this, there's no need to play all the key men for the full 90 minutes, especially if Hearts don't apply serious pressure. But switching to a fully reserve lineup doesn't make sense for Marco Silva either. Benfica need to see the tie out calmly and keep their rhythm ahead of the decisive stage of the qualifying competition.

The visitors' main advantage is their enormous cushion. Even if Benfica concede first, the situation barely changes. One Hearts goal would only reduce the lead to four. So I expect a more pragmatic approach from the Portuguese. Unlike in the first match, Benfica won't be constantly forcing the pace and will most likely pick their moments to accelerate.

The Portuguese Primeira Liga got underway last weekend, but the Eagles couldn't win in the opening round. At Estádio da Luz, Benfica started with a draw against top-flight newcomers Académico de Viseu (2:2). It's undoubtedly a frustrating dropped points for a club with title ambitions.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The first match ended with a fairly high level of physical intensity. Two Benfica players received bookings, while Hearts had four. Some of the fouls were linked to tough one-on-one duels and attempts to stop the Portuguese side's quick attacks. The character of the contest may change in the second leg. Hearts need to play more aggressively, as the team has nothing to lose. Benfica, on the other hand, benefit from controlling the ball and avoiding a large number of duels.

An early home goal could sharply raise the tension. If Hearts take the lead, the hosts will get an emotional boost and Benfica will have to stop attacks with fouls more often. On the other hand, if the score stays calm, the Portuguese could spend most of the match without unnecessary infringements. So here I would slightly lower expectations compared to the first match. Prediction: total yellow cards under 3.5.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

The main mistake in this match is to carry the result of the first leg over to the second. The 6:1 scoreline does speak to a colossal difference in quality, but there is no reason to expect a repeat of that scenario. Benfica have already got the result they needed. The Portuguese do not need to score four, five or six goals. The longer Hearts go without scoring, the more the hosts will have to take risks, and that automatically creates space for counter-attacks.

At the same time, the Scottish side are currently in good attacking form. The team scored four goals against Dundee United. The players have gained extra confidence, and home advantage should help them play with more boldness. So I would not rule out a goal for the hosts. A week ago, when they started playing more boldly, they created two big chances. But Benfica, with the high individual quality of their players, will almost certainly find at least one chance too. The most logical scenario looks like total goals over 2.5 at 1.47*. This bet came in in 6 of Hearts' last 7 matches and in nine Benfica matches in a row.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

On corners I expect a more interesting picture than in the first match. In Lisbon, Benfica won that count (6:2), which fully reflected the nature of the game. The Portuguese had long spells of possession and constantly loaded the opposition's defence. Now the advantage should shift to Hearts. The Scottish side need to attack, ideally from the opening minutes. Wide deliveries and crosses will be one of the main ways to apply pressure.

But once Hearts push their defensive line up, the quick Rafa Silva, Prestianni and Duran will be able to regularly run into space. So I expect a fairly high overall total, but I prefer to place my main bet on the hosts. Prediction: Hearts individual total corners over 3.5 at 1.83*. It came in in 8 of the team's last 9 matches at Tynecastle Park.

*Odds are indicative and may vary depending on the bookmaker.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

After the first leg, the question of Benfica's progression is virtually settled. Even if Hearts win the second leg, they need to do so by a margin of at least five goals to take the tie to extra time. That is an almost inconceivable scenario. So the value of the match is completely different for the two sides. Hearts will play for their fans and for pride, while Benfica will be looking for a comfortable end to the tie and to conserve energy.

It is particularly notable that Hearts have already managed to restore their psychological state after the heavy defeat. The win over Dundee United showed that the team did not fall apart following four losses at the start of the season. Benfica have been given the opportunity to play at their own pace. The Portuguese side do not need to attack constantly, and Marco Silva can distribute playing time among his squad.

Hearts should play far more boldly than they did in Lisbon, and are quite capable of scoring at home. But in terms of squad quality, the Eagles remain significantly superior, and the space that will open up in the Scottish side's half with that kind of attacking play should allow the visitors to respond. My bet: both teams to score (yes), which has landed in nine consecutive Benfica away matches. The predicted score is 2:1 to Benfica.
