Boca Juniors vs Cd Recoleta Prediction 11 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Boca Juniors begin their round of 16 tie against Deportes Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana. The Argentinians reached the playoff stage through a difficult series against O'Higgins, which they only managed to close out in a penalty shootout. The Paraguayan club advanced directly to this stage, finishing the group phase without a defeat. The two sides now meet in the first leg in Buenos Aires, with Boca once again playing at their reserve ground due to ongoing works at their home stadium, La Bombonera.

    Head-to-Head

📊 Boca Juniors and Deportes Recoleta have never met in an official match before. There is therefore no head-to-head record to speak of, and the main conclusions have to be drawn from the current form of both sides and their performances in the Copa Sudamericana. The two clubs also have very different levels of international experience. Boca are one of the most decorated clubs on the continent and regularly play at the highest level, while Recoleta only made their international debut in 2026.

    Boca Juniors Team Overview

Boca ended up in the Copa Sudamericana after finishing third in their Copa Libertadores group. In the play-off they were drawn against O'Higgins and won the first leg at home 1:0 thanks to a goal from Miguel Merentiel. However, in Chile the Argentines lost by the same score, then won the penalty shootout 4:3. Over 180 minutes Boca scored just one open-play goal against their opponents and created problems for themselves where they could have settled the tie in normal time.

In the domestic league the situation is also far from ideal at the moment. Following a defeat to Deportivo Riestra (0:3), Boca have gone three games unbeaten, drawing with Newell's Old Boys and Vélez and beating Estudiantes. The match against Vélez Sarsfield gave Arruabarrena reasons for optimism: after conceding, Boca raised their level, equalised through Santiago Ascacibar and had several chances to snatch a win.

Leandro Paredes remains the main creative force. His pass helped Merentiel score in the first leg against O'Higgins. More importantly, the midfielder's presence allows Boca to control the tempo and switch play to the flanks more quickly. In attack Merentiel remains the primary threat, though the Argentines are clearly lacking consistency in the final third.

The stadium factor also deserves separate consideration. Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó is no longer a neutral venue for Boca: the club have been playing their home matches there during the Bombonera renovation. But in terms of atmosphere and the scale of support it is still not a full replacement for their home ground. In the first match against Recoleta, Boca will have home advantage, though it is somewhat weaker than usual.

    Cd Recoleta Team Overview

Recoleta were one of the biggest surprises of the Copa Sudamericana group stage. The Paraguayans played six matches without a single defeat, even though their group included solid sides in Santos, San Lorenzo and Deportivo Cuenca. They finished top of the group and advanced directly to the last 16. Particularly telling is that Recoleta did not try to compete with more established opponents purely through open football. In six group stage matches the team conceded five goals and kept two clean sheets. Even away from home, the Paraguayans regularly picked up points.

Ahead of the trip to Buenos Aires, Recoleta are in good form. On 7 August they beat Rubio ÑU (3:1) in the Clausura Paraguay. That is already their second consecutive win. Across those two matches Recoleta scored five goals, and the victory over Rubio ÑU moved them closer to the top 3 of the championship.

However, the Paraguayans have suffered a significant loss. Allan Vlk, who was one of Recoleta's main sources of goals in the first half of the season, has left the club and continued his career at Lanús. For the playoff against Boca this is an unwelcome development: Recoleta were never particularly prolific in the Copa Sudamericana, and now they have lost one of their key players right before the toughest tie of the tournament.

The scenario for the first match is therefore fairly obvious for the visitors: a compact defence, a short distance between the lines, a focus on quick transitions and an attempt to keep the score at an acceptable level for as long as possible. Recoleta have already shown they can play exactly in this way - the total under 2.5 goals has come in in 6 of their last 7 matches in the Copa Sudamericana.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The match has been assigned to Chilean referee Piero Maza, who has been entrusted with the first leg of the tie. For this kind of contest, the appointment is quite telling: Boca will be forced to attack a lot in positional play, while Recoleta will spend most of the time without the ball. This increases the likelihood of tactical fouls from the visitors when breaking up attacks.

An additional factor is the status of the match. This is the first game of a two-legged tie, so neither side is likely to take maximum risks straight away. Recoleta will frequently stop quick attacks, while Boca will have to deal with counter-attacks. With this kind of pattern, four bookings looks like a very achievable figure. I wouldn't go too high on the individual total for either team: the distribution of cards could depend heavily on the scenario and the timing of the first goal. So the prediction is: total yellow cards over 3.5. This outcome came in in four of Boca's previous matches and in seven of Recoleta's last games.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

The main argument in favour of a low-scoring match is Recoleta's international statistics. In six group stage matches the Paraguayans scored just six goals and conceded five, with 5 of those 6 games finishing with a total of under 2.5 goals. Boca's situation is similar. In two matches against O'Higgins the team scored only one goal, with both games ending 1-0. In the last four rounds of the Clausura the Argentinians also failed to score more than twice in a match.

That said, writing Boca off entirely would be risky too. The team are playing at home, have a clear advantage in individual quality, and will be forced to push forward since the return leg takes place in Asunción. One goal for the hosts looks very likely, while a second or third will depend on the quality of finishing.

Recoleta are capable of scoring on the back of mistakes, but the absence of one of their key attacking players reduces their potential. So the most logical scenario is Boca's dominance without a high-scoring game from either side. Prediction: total goals under 3.5 at 1.38*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Given the nature of the match, Boca should have the advantage in corners. The Argentinians will need to attack mostly through positional combinations, while Recoleta are interested in keeping their shape as compact as possible. The longer the visitors hold the score, the more crosses, cutbacks and blocked shots in front of the Paraguayan goal there will be.

That said, I wouldn't go too high on the overall total. Recoleta don't have to respond to Boca's pressure with attacks of their own and could quite easily spend most of the match in a low block. So it makes more sense to back the hosts' individual stat rather than the overall figure.

Boca should regularly get their attacks out to the flanks and win set pieces. With the expected advantage in possession and shots, the six-corner mark looks achievable even in a cautious scenario. Prediction: Boca Juniors individual corners total over 5.5 at 1.43*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary depending on the bookmaker.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

On paper this should be a one-sided contest: Boca are significantly superior to Recoleta in squad depth, experience and quality of players. But the Argentinians' current form gives no reason to expect an easy win. The team still loses control of matches too often and after four rounds of the Clausura they have just one victory.

Recoleta, on the other hand, have spent several months proving they cannot be judged purely by their status as a Paraguayan club. The team finished their Copa Sudamericana group stage unbeaten, took three points in Buenos Aires against San Lorenzo, and have now won their last two league matches. So a scenario involving an early Boca goal followed by a rout looks doubtful.

Over 90 minutes, however, the home side's advantage should tell. Paredes can give Boca control of the midfield, and Merentiel remains the main candidate to score. Recoleta will resist, but they will have to spend too much time without the ball. My prediction is Boca Juniors individual total goals under 2.5. This bet has come in for 13 consecutive Argentinian matches. Expected score - 2:0 to the hosts.
