Boca Juniors vs Sao Paulo Prediction 9 September 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Boca Juniors and São Paulo meet in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana quarter-final. The Argentines have home advantage and come into the match after a comfortable passage past Deportivo Recoleta, while São Paulo saw off Bolívar in the previous round. Both sides are in good form, so a tense and fairly cautious first meeting is expected in Buenos Aires.

    Head-to-Head

📊 These two clubs haven't faced each other in almost 20 years, so their head-to-head record is unlikely to be of much help in putting together this prediction.

    Boca Juniors Team Overview

Boca Juniors came through their Round of 16 tie against Deportivo Recoleta comfortably, winning the first leg 3-1 and then taking the second leg in Paraguay 4-0. Leandro Paredes continues to be a key figure in central midfield, with Santiago Ascacibar adding the intensity and work rate the team need. CONMEBOL has specifically highlighted this partnership as one of the main reasons for Boca's current competitiveness.

Domestically, Rodolfo Arruabarrena's side have been inconsistent. After the win over Recoleta, Boca drew with Racing, beat Lanús, then needed a penalty shootout to get past Vélez Sarsfield in the Round of 16 of the Copa Argentina, before dropping points on 5 September against Gimnasia de Mendoza - drawing 2-2 after leading twice and conceding the equaliser late on. Arruabarrena himself admitted the team had thrown away two important points.

In international competition, though, Boca have looked far more assured. They were in complete control across both legs against Recoleta. At La Bombonera, they will almost certainly look to take the initiative from the off, though they are unlikely to take excessive risks - with the second leg in São Paulo still to come, getting an advantage matters more than opening the game up.

    Sao Paulo Team Overview

São Paulo go into the quarter-final in good form. After a prolonged difficult run in the league, they have won two matches in a row, including a convincing 2-0 victory over Atlético Mineiro on 5 September. Head coach Dorival Júnior described that match as the best the team had played since his return to the club. São Paulo pressed their opponents intensely and gave them almost no room to build attacks.

In the Copa Sudamericana, the Brazilians came through against Bolívar. The first leg in La Paz ended 1-1, and São Paulo won the return at the Morumbi 3-1. Dorival Júnior indicated in advance that São Paulo would travel to Buenos Aires with close to their strongest available squad. He had deliberately rested Jonathan Calleri in recent league matches so the striker would be in the best possible condition for the tie against Boca Juniors. In addition, Victor Sá has recovered and took part in a full training session on 6 September. Luzza has also returned to unrestricted training, though he is still working his way back to full fitness.

São Paulo's current defensive organisation looks like an important asset. The team have switched to a back three and kept a clean sheet in their most recent match. Up front, Calleri and Luciano are there to take advantage of any errors Boca Juniors make in transition.

    Latest news

    Boca Juniors

❌ Boca Juniors have a fairly long list of unavailable players. Milton Delgado, Tomás Aranda, Ayrton Costa, Malcom Braida and Adam Bareiro are all out, while Agustín Marchesín and Rodrigo Battaglia are both carrying fitness concerns. Arruabarrena therefore has less than a full squad to choose from ahead of this crucial play-off match.

    Sao Paulo

❌ The situation at São Paulo is gradually improving. Luzza and Victor Sá have returned to full training, though Luzza is not yet considered fully match-fit. Damián Bobadilla and Lucas Moura remain among those with physical issues. Calleri, meanwhile, is ready to return to the starting XI after his recovery.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

This is a quarter-final of a continental tournament, and both sides are well aware of what is at stake in the first leg. São Paulo have been picking up more yellow cards on average than Boca in this Copa Sudamericana campaign: 2.4 per game compared to 1.3. The Argentines tend to control possession more, which means the Brazilians will spend a lot of time without the ball and will need to break up the hosts' attacks. The high cost of a mistake in midfield adds another layer. All of this points to a fair number of tactical fouls. The bet is Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Both teams have quality attackers, but the nature of a first-leg quarter-final should encourage a more cautious approach. Boca's poor result against Gimnasia was another reminder that their problems tend to emerge when the team loses concentration late in matches.

São Paulo, by contrast, have won their last two matches and have become noticeably more organised defensively under Dorival Júnior. The Brazilians will likely look to weather the early pressure at the Bombonera and keep the score manageable ahead of the second leg.

The statistics also point towards a low-scoring game: in their last five matches, Boca have averaged 1.6 goals scored and 0.6 conceded. São Paulo's corresponding figures are 1.6 and 0.8. The bet is Total Goals - Under 2.5 at 1.55*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Boca, at home, should enjoy more possession and regularly attack down the flanks. In the current Copa Sudamericana, the Argentines are averaging around 6 corners per match, while São Paulo are averaging approximately 5.4. São Paulo have also been using pressing actively in recent matches and are capable of generating pressure of their own. So the combined total could well approach double figures. The bet is Total Corners - Over 8.5 at 1.51*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Prediction

Boca Juniors look slight favourites, with home advantage and the Bombonera atmosphere working in their favour. The Argentinians have been particularly convincing in international matches, and the heavy win over Deportivo Recoleta will have given them a confidence boost. That said, São Paulo are in very good form right now, having won their last two matches, so an easy home victory is far from guaranteed.

Boca will likely see more of the ball and apply pressure, but São Paulo are capable of absorbing a good deal of it. Prediction: Total Goals - Under 2.5. As for the result, a narrow win for the Argentine club looks the most probable outcome. Result prediction: Boca Juniors to win 1-0.
