Stuttgart vs Viking Prediction 9 September 2026

Details
The main thing

πŸ”Š On 9 September, Stuttgart will begin their UEFA Champions League league phase campaign with a home match against Viking. The German club go into their European opener on the back of a convincing win over KΓΆln, while the Norwegians have already come through a tough test in qualifying, knocking out Dinamo Zagreb. On paper, the hosts are clearly the stronger side, but Viking are in excellent form and are capable of causing problems even away from home.

πŸ” We regularly update this prediction. Keep an eye on the Latest News section.

    Head-to-Head

πŸ“Š Stuttgart and Viking have never met in an official match. The upcoming game will be the first head-to-head meeting between the German and Norwegian clubs.

    Stuttgart Team Overview

After a dismal Bundesliga opener in which Stuttgart lost 5-1 to Bayern, Sebastian Hoeneß's side quickly made amends in front of their own fans. They beat KΓΆln 4-1 at home, with Stuttgart in complete control for much of the first half. Bilal El-Khannous opened the scoring with a fine individual run, Grisha PrΓΆmel added another after the break, Ermedin DemiroviΔ‡ made it three, and Josha Vagnoman wrapped things up in stoppage time.

The statistics were equally impressive: 22 shots, 10 corners and 58% possession. Hoeneß's side were highly intense from the first minute, pressing high and putting Kâln's defence under constant pressure. That kind of football could be their main advantage against Viking as well.

El-Khannous deserves a particular mention. The Moroccan is in excellent form and has become one of Stuttgart's primary creative outlets. Demirović also sharpened the attack after coming off the bench, and the club have kept hold of most of their key players over the summer.

After the win over Kâln, Hoeneß specifically highlighted the intensity, pressing and pace with which his team played for most of the match. For Stuttgart, it was an important signal ahead of their first Champions League fixture - the manager got exactly the response he was looking for after the defeat to Bayern.

    Viking Team Overview

Viking arrive at their Champions League league phase debut with considerable European experience from recent weeks. The Norwegians first drew 2-2 with Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia, then beat them 3-1 at home to reach the league phase for the first time in the club's history.

They have also kept up with their domestic schedule. After a 2-1 win over Γ…lesund and a 3-1 Norwegian Cup victory over Brodd, Viking drew 1-1 with Sandefjord. After 20 rounds, they sit second in the Eliteserien with 44 points, three behind leaders BodΓΈ/Glimt.

Zlatko Tripić remains Viking's key player. In the Norwegian league he is one of the team's most productive and consistent performers, and his individual rating this season is one of the highest in the squad.

The Norwegians' main advantage is their cohesion and match rhythm. Viking have already played several high-level matches in Champions League qualifying and are accustomed to handling pressure from opponents. Away to Stuttgart, however, they will face a side capable of controlling the ball for extended periods and creating a large number of chances. The step up to a German arena will therefore be a serious test of their defensive solidity.

    Latest news

    Stuttgart

❌ Stuttgart have some injury concerns. Dennis Seimen is still recovering from injury, so Fabian Bredlow continues in goal. Thiago Tomas, Nicolas Nartey, Luca Hacques, Jeremie Arevalo and Dan-Axel Zagadou are also out. Leo Sauer has returned to the squad, though, and the core of the team are in good shape heading into their European campaign opener.

    Viking

❌ Viking go into their debut match in the Champions League league phase with a number of injury concerns. Martin Ove Røset, Anders Bærtelsen and Veton Berisha are all likely to miss the game against Stuttgart through injury. Henrik Falkeener, who has been carrying a hip problem, is also doubtful, as is Nick D'Agostino.

πŸ’° On top of that, Viking recently lost Edwin AustbΓΈ from their squad - the attacking player joined West Ham. In the final days of the transfer window, however, Viking brought in Henrik BjΓΈrdal, Erik Botheim and Essien Bassi, though the new arrivals will still need time to adapt to the team's demands and the level of European competition.

    Predicted Lineups

πŸ“‹ Predicted Stuttgart XI: Bredlow - Eljič, SzabΓ³, MittelstΓ€dt - Vagnoman, PrΓΆmmel, Stiller, FΓΌhrich - Undav, El-Hannuss, PejčinoviΔ‡

πŸ“‹ Predicted Viking XI: ØstbΓΈ - Heggheim, Stensnes, Dalann, Aukland - KvΓ―a-Egeskog, Moi, Bell, TripiΔ‡ - Kristiansen, Askildsen.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

This should be a fairly intense match. Stuttgart press actively and look to win the ball back quickly after losing it, while Viking have already shown in European qualifying that they are prepared to do a lot of work without the ball. In Stuttgart's last match against KΓΆln, the two sides picked up four yellow cards between them.

Viking, meanwhile, received four yellow cards in their second leg against Dinamo Zagreb. Given the high tempo and the volume of physical duels expected, a bet on Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5 looks justified.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Stuttgart will be looking to start their European campaign with a win, so the hosts should be expected to come out attacking from the first minute. Their last home match against Kâln showed just how dangerous Hoeneß's side can be when they have space and the opportunity to press forward continuously.

Viking will likely sit deep and defend. Yes, the Norwegians scored five goals across two matches against Dinamo Zagreb and have been creating chances regularly in their recent games, but Morten Jensen's side have not yet faced resistance at this level. Prediction: Stuttgart Team Total - Over 2.5 at 1.65*.

    🚩 Corner Kick Prediction

Stuttgart are capable of generating a high volume of set pieces through positional pressure. In their last home match against KΓΆln, they earned 10 corners, with their wide players regularly carrying attacks through to crosses and cutbacks.

Viking, for their part, are unlikely to spend the full 90 minutes pinned back in their own box. The Norwegians will look for counter-attacking opportunities and should be capable of earning a few corners themselves. A combined total in the region of 9-10 corners therefore looks achievable. Prediction: Total Corners - Over 8.5 at odds of 1.44*.

    πŸš€ Player Statistics Bet

The standout candidate is Bilal El-Khannous. The Moroccan scored against Cologne and was one of Stuttgart's most active attacking players. His individual technique and tendency to cut in from the flank allow him to regularly get shots off. Bet: Bilal El-Khannous to score or assist. Odds - 1.58*.

    😱 Risky Bet

Viking are a genuine threat going forward, but the difference in class between the two sides is particularly evident when you compare squad depth and the quality of individual players. Stuttgart at home are capable of creating a large number of chances and settling the tie before half-time. Bet: Stuttgart Team Total 1st Half - Over 2 Goals. Odds - 4.4*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

Even with a cautious start, Stuttgart should create enough chances to score at least two goals. In their last home match, the Swabians hit KΓΆln four times and created 22 shot attempts. Bet: Stuttgart to Win at 1.25*.

πŸ‘€ If the match doesn't go to script

If Viking manage to score first, Stuttgart will need to increase the pressure significantly. In that scenario, the Norwegians could find space on the counter-attack, while the hosts may switch to a more direct style of play. Even so, the quality gap and home advantage still give the Swabians a decent chance of at least levelling.

In that alternative scenario, an interesting option would be Total Goals - Over 3.5: an early goal could completely change the shape of the match and push both sides into playing considerably more openly. The odds are 1.68*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Prediction

Stuttgart head into their Champions League debut on the back of a very convincing Bundesliga win and should carry that attacking intent into their home fixture. Viking earned their place in the league phase and are capable of scoring, but facing a stronger opponent away from home, the Norwegians will find it extremely difficult to handle the pressure for the full ninety minutes.

I'm expecting an open match with plenty of chances, where the Swabians should take control and gradually make their class advantage count. Prediction: Stuttgart to win with a handicap of -1.5. Suggested scoreline: 4-1.
