📊 The two sides met once in an official match last season, with Liverpool winning 3-2. The English side went two goals up quickly, but a brace from Marcos Llorente allowed Atlético to level. The decisive moment came in the 92nd minute, when Virgil van Dijk gave the hosts the win.

    Liverpool Team Overview

After a difficult start to the Premier League season, Liverpool finally got their first win, beating Ipswich 2-0. Both goals were scored by Alexander Isak, and summer signing Bradley Barkola made his debut for the club as a second-half substitute. The result allowed Andoni Iraola's side to go into their Champions League opener in a more positive frame of mind.

The squad situation remains complicated, though. Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitike are both doubts ahead of the match, while Federico Chiesa has not been included in Liverpool's Champions League squad. Joe Gomez, by contrast, is in the European squad.

For Iraola, the match against Atlético will be his first as Liverpool manager in the Champions League. The club are also entering a congested period of the season, with the European fixture just one of several games in a short space of time.

    Atletico Madrid Team Overview

Atlético have not had the perfect start to the season either. After four rounds they had already dropped points against Villarreal, then suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Athletic. That last result makes for uncomfortable reading ahead of a trip to Anfield.

Diego Simeone's squad did receive a significant boost in attack, though. The club signed Jonathan David, and Julián Álvarez remains in the squad. However, injury concerns have emerged ahead of the trip to England: David has picked up a muscle problem, while Alexander Sørloth continues his recovery.

Atlético remain a dangerous opponent in matches at this level. Simeone knows how to close space and exploit opponents' mistakes, so Liverpool cannot expect an easy win.

    Latest news

    Liverpool

❌ The main injury concern is Alisson, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury and will not play. Curtis Jones is also out with a thigh problem.

❓ Trent Alexander-Arnold is a major doubt after missing two training sessions with a muscular complaint. Arne Slot has said the final decision will be made before the match.

✔ Diogo Jota had also been sidelined, but the Portuguese has returned to training this week and is fully fit to play.

✔ Harvey Elliott has recovered from illness and is also back in full training - the midfield is at full strength.

    Atletico Madrid

❌ The main injury absence is Robin Le Normand, who suffered a skull fracture in a collision during a La Liga match and is out for an extended period. César Azpilicueta will also miss the game with a calf injury.

❓ Koke's participation is very much in doubt as he continues to recover from an ankle bruise. The coaching staff have included him in the squad, but the captain has been training individually. Diego Simeone said the decision will be made immediately before the match.

✔ José María Giménez had also been out, but the defender has recovered from a minor injury and returned to full group training on 5 September - he is fully fit.

✔ Samuel Lino has served his La Liga suspension and is available for European competition. All other outfield players are also available apart from the injured absentees, leaving the squad in good shape.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Liverpool predicted starting XI: Alisson - Kerkez, Van Dijk, Jaquet, Araújo - Szoboszlai, Gravenberch - Barcola, Wirtz, Gakpo - Isak.

📋 Atlético Madrid predicted starting XI: Oblak - Grimaldo, Hancko, Pubill, Llorente - Lukman, Pablo Barrios, Hjulmand - G. Simeone - Alex Baena, Lee Kang-in.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

A clean sheet for either side seems unlikely here. Liverpool have scored in 14 of their last 15 home matches - a trend that is hard to ignore. Atlético, meanwhile, have conceded in 11 of their last 12 away matches in the Champions League, which looks particularly worrying for the Madrid side at Anfield. Defensive problems on both ends only reinforce this scenario.

On top of that, these two sides produced five goals across two matches last season, and Atlético's current injury losses up front may force them to set up more defensively - though that seems unlikely to prevent them from conceding, and will probably just reduce their own attacking output. Our pick: Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1.62*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Liverpool will likely take control at home and attack regularly down the flanks. In last year's meeting at Anfield, the two sides combined for 13 corners, with the hosts earning seven of them. Atlético are capable of hitting back on the counter and creating pressure during transitions, which can also lead to set pieces in the attacking third. That kind of game gives reason to expect another high corner count. Our pick: Total Corners - Over 8.5 at 1.65*.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

This match looks set to be a fairly physical one. Atlético will likely try to disrupt Liverpool's attacking rhythm through tight, aggressive defending, while the hosts will need to stop Madrid's quick counter-attacks. The referee appointed for the match, Davide Massa, averaged 4.94 yellow cards per game last season. In the Champions League, however, his figure was noticeably lower at 2.83 bookings per match. So a high card count shouldn't be expected, but four yellows looks achievable. Our pick: Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5.

    🚀 Player Statistics Bet

Alexander Isak has scored in each of Liverpool's first three Premier League matches this season - three goals in three games, which is exactly as many as he managed across the whole of last season in 14 appearances. After a difficult debut year at Liverpool disrupted by injuries, the Swede is finally showing the form that persuaded the club to spend a record £125 million on him.

There is a particular storyline around Andoni Iraola's first European night at Anfield. For Isak personally, his Champions League record is modest - just one goal in 13 career appearances in the competition. But these are precisely the kind of matches that can end a poor run. With Atlético facing squad problems - their first-choice striker Alexander Sørloth is injured and Julián Álvarez, who wants to leave the club, has been inconsistent - their defence looks as vulnerable as it has for some time. Atlético have conceded in 16 of their last 17 matches.

Isak is in tremendous form, as his brace in nine minutes against Ipswich showed. Alongside Cody Gakpo, who has provided all three of his assists for Isak this season, and with Anfield behind him, the Swede has every chance of scoring on his Champions League debut for Liverpool. We think he will. Our pick: Isak to Score - Yes.

    😱 Risky Bet

Atlético's attacking output is not at its best right now. But their priority will likely be shoring up defensively, and true to form, they may start with a low block to feel out a difficult opponent. Liverpool also have defensive concerns of their own - they have conceded 4 goals in their last 3 matches. If the game is played in a defensive shape, we may not see many goals. Our pick: Total Goals - Under 2.5 at odds of 2.39*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

Liverpool at home, in front of their own fans, are determined to give everything and have no intention of dropping points. They have gone unbeaten in 9 of their last 10 home matches. Our pick: Liverpool not to lose at odds of 1.23*.

👀 If the Match Doesn't Go to Script

An early Atlético goal could change the entire complexion of the game. In that case, Liverpool would need to push for an equaliser at the other end before half-time. With that in mind, we can look at 1st Half Total Goals - Over 1.5 at odds of 2.39*.

    ⭐️ Editorial Prediction

Liverpool got the win they needed against Ipswich ahead of their Champions League opener, but they are still some way from their best. Atlético are also inconsistent, particularly defensively, though they are capable of making life difficult for the hosts through discipline and counter-attacks. The experienced Simeone knows opponents like Liverpool well and tends to find a way to unlock their defence.

The Anfield factor tips the balance in favour of the home side, but a comfortable win looks unlikely. The predicted scoreline is 2-1. The main bet: Liverpool to win.
