Brentford vs Sunderland Prediction 5 September 2026

Details
The main thing

πŸ”Š Brentford and Sunderland meet in the third round of the English Premier League. This match is a pure clash of footballing philosophies. Keith Andrews has turned Brentford into the most dangerous counter-attacking machine in the Premier League. But the Bees face RΓ©gis Le Bris's Sunderland - a side that has just broken into European football, signed Granit Xhaka, and are ready to suffocate any opponent with their ultra-aggressive pressing.

    Head-to-Head

πŸ“Š The two sides have met five times previously, with Brentford winning three, Sunderland one, and one match ending in a draw. Last season they met twice, with each side winning at home.

    Brentford Team Overview

The man in the dugout is 45-year-old Irishman Keith Andrews, who received an internal promotion in the summer of 2025, stepping into the role vacated by Thomas Frank, who moved up to Tottenham. Andrews has taken to the job impressively: in the 2025/26 season he matched the club's best-ever finish, guiding them to 9th place in the Premier League table. As a reward, the club tied him down to a long-term contract through to 2032 at the start of the current year. Under the new manager, the team has adopted a slightly deeper shape in the central areas, inviting pressure and placing a key emphasis on explosive transitions from defence to attack.

Brentford made a brilliant start to the competitive season, sweeping aside all opposition, scoring 10 goals across three matches and conceding just twice. They beat Tottenham 3-0 in the first league round, knocked Birmingham out of the League Cup 6-1, and drew 1-1 away at Leeds in the most recent Premier League round.

    Sunderland Team Overview

Sunderland are enjoying the best period they have had in years. French manager RΓ©gis Le Bris has worked something of a miracle: he first brought the Black Cats back to the Premier League, then last season they finished a remarkable seventh in the top flight, earning the club a place in the Europa League. Right now the team are adapting to life as a regular European competitor. Le Bris has the side playing modern, dynamic football, with the approach built around intense pressing and quick ball movement through the flanks.

Sunderland look competitive at the start of the new season. In the opening round they suffered a frustrating away defeat to Ipswich (1-2), but put things right in their most recent home match, beating Fulham 1-0 thanks to a goal from Wilson Isidor. The team are gradually finding their rhythm, given the number of ambitious new signings in the squad.

    Latest news

    Brentford

❓ The club's main signings in the transfer window were Mamadou Sangare, Yannick Schuster, Jaidon Anthony, Callum Wilson and Malick Diouf. Several players departed, with Mikkel Damsgaard, Yegor Yarmolyuk, Ethan Pinnock and Frank Onyeka all leaving the club.

    Sunderland

❌ The victory over Fulham was overshadowed by a serious loss for the coaching staff. Habib Diarra, one of the midfield leaders who provided an assist in the previous round, suffered a severe thigh/groin injury. He underwent surgery and is expected to be out for approximately six to eight weeks.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

This looks like a high-scoring match. Brentford occupy a unique place in European football, with only Bayern Munich ahead of them for counter-attacking efficiency. Against a pressing Sunderland side, they will find their moments in the space behind the defensive line. At the same time, RΓ©gis Le Bris's side have a powerful attack and will not sit back. The home side's goal-fest in their opening matches of the season also points to plenty of goals. We're backing Total Goals - Over 2.5 at odds of 1.85*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

With Brentford defending in a mid or low block, the home side's defenders will regularly use the byline to clear the ball from the box. The visitors alone are capable of generating around 6-7 corners, while the hosts should add their own 3-4 set pieces through infrequent but highly dangerous attacks. We think the most reliable option here is Total Corners - Over 8.5 at odds of 1.44*.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

Keith Andrews' Brentford play in a deep, structured shape without getting drawn into high, chaotic pressing, and their average foul count is one of the lowest in the league - the team pick up around 2.5 yellow cards per match. The hosts' restrained style and the lack of open spaces in the first half don't lend themselves to a high number of cynical fouls. The match referee is Thomas Bramall. He is known for letting teams compete and being reluctant to reach for his pocket early in a match. If the game doesn't descend into outright roughness, he tends to prefer a word in the ear, which keeps the overall card count to a minimum. Our prediction is Total Yellow Cards - Under 4.5, priced at 1.55*.

*Odds are approximate and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐️ Editorial Prediction

Sunderland will come looking for a win and should find a goal through possession and set pieces. However, the loss of Habib Diarra will weaken the visitors' midfield, which should give Brentford regular numerical advantages on the transition. With Sunderland playing open, pressing football with a high defensive line, the hosts are guaranteed to have plenty of space to work with. Containing Brentford's pacey attack in those conditions will be extremely difficult - they will find a goal at home. Our main prediction is Both Teams to Score - Yes. Predicted score: 2-1.
