Australia vs Egypt Prediction 3 July 2026
🔊 What should we expect from a match that on paper looks like one of the less glamorous Round of 32 ties? The expansion of the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams has inevitably stretched the level of the knockout stage, and Australia vs Egypt at AT&T Stadium in Dallas fits that description. Under the old format both sides might not have made it out of the group - but that's irrelevant now. They're here, one match from a historic step forward. Egypt had never previously made it out of a group stage, and their only previous knockout appearance was back in 1934 when the format started directly with elimination matches. Australia have reached the last 16 before, but have never gone further.

Head-to-Head
📊 Australia and Egypt have met just twice, both friendlies. The last was in 2010 - too long ago to draw any meaningful conclusions.
Head-to-head statistics Australia - Egypt

Australia Team Overview
Australia qualified for the 2026 World Cup relatively comfortably, losing just once in ten matches in the third round of Asian qualification. The tournament draw also gave Popovic's side a genuine chance: Turkey, USA and Paraguay - a tough group, but not a hopeless one. In the end the Asian confederation's representative slightly exceeded expectations: four points and second place.
The final group game against Paraguay told its own story. Both sides had three points, both were happy with a draw, and that's what happened - 0-0. Popovic made six changes from round two and started 18-year-old Herrington from the first minute, becoming Australia's youngest ever World Cup starter. The team played a 3-4-2-1 while Paraguay answered with cautious 5-3-2. Nothing really happened - combined xG of just 1.09, one of the lowest figures of the entire tournament. Australia looked slightly more active: Irvine could have scored on four minutes, Vólpato forced Gil into a save just before half-time. After the break the pace dropped completely and neither side took any risks. Both teams got what they came for.

Egypt Team Overview
Egypt tore through World Cup qualifying, finishing top of their group with 26 points from 30 and conceding just two goals in ten matches. The draw for the final tournament was also kind: Belgium, Iran and New Zealand were opponents Egypt could realistically compete with. And they did - Hossam Hassan's side went unbeaten, drew with Belgium (1-1) and Iran (1-1), beat New Zealand (3-1), finished on five points and second in the group.
They could have topped it. They needed a win over Iran in the final round, and the start was perfect. Hassan went 4-2-3-1 with Salah on the right, Trezeguet left and Ziko up front. On five minutes, Ziko opened the scoring with a precise finish into the bottom corner. Egypt couldn't build on it. Iran seized control quickly. Taremi won a penalty that Shobeir saved brilliantly - only the second Egyptian goalkeeper in history to stop a World Cup spot kick. But minutes later Rezaeian turned in a rebound to level. Despite having more of the ball and more shots, Egypt's defensive moments were far more dangerous (Iran had 5-0 on big chances). In second-half stoppage time Khalilzadeh put it in the net - only for VAR to rule it out for offside. The draw kept Egypt in second, but the performance left questions. They showed character again, but were closer to losing than the score suggested. A separate worry: Salah came off on 57 minutes with a leg problem - the least amount of time he's ever played at a World Cup.

Latest news
Australia
🎙 Tony Popovic after the Paraguay draw: "This is a special day for all of Australia - from the federation to every single fan. We've qualified from the group stage at back-to-back World Cups for the first time in history, and that's a massive achievement for such a young team… I made six changes because nobody has a guaranteed starting place for life. Everyone has to prove their value, even if it looks like a risk from the outside."
🚫 Australia have a couple of confirmed absentees: Jacob Italiano and Matthew Leckie are both out. Leckie's absence is the more painful - an experienced attacker who gives the team movement going forward. That said, Australia have already managed without him, so no major restructuring should be needed.
Egypt
🎙 Hossam Hassan after the Iran draw: "Salah asked to come off himself - which means he felt something. We'll run some tests straight away, but it doesn't look serious… I have warriors in my squad. If I panicked at every injury I'd have no right to coach Egypt. Whoever comes in for Salah or Fathy, I trust every one of them."
❌ Egypt's situation is considerably more complicated: Hamdi Fathy, Ahmed Fotouh and Mohamed Salah are all doubtful, while Hossam Abdelmagid and Mohamed Abdel Monem are also on the injury list, and Mohanad Lashin is suspended after accumulating yellow cards. The main question mark is Salah - without him, finding ways through Australia's defence becomes a much harder task.
🔁 Update as of July 3, 4:30 UTC:
- Mohamed Salah's availability remains the biggest talking point ahead of kickoff. A day before the match, Hossam Hassan admitted he was still undecided on whether the Egyptian star would start. However, there appears to be little doubt that Salah will feature at some stage. Australia head coach Tony Popovic confirmed that his team has prepared for both possibilities: one with Salah in the starting lineup, and another in which the former Liverpool winger is introduced later in the match.
🔁 Update as of July 3, 11:25 UTC:
- An off-field incident unfolded a day before the match. While it is unlikely to have any direct impact on the game itself, it reflects the tense atmosphere surrounding the fixture. When the Egypt squad arrived at their team hotel in Texas, players stopped to take photos with fans. During the gathering, local police prevented the national team's director from joining the group, first pushing him aside and then engaging in a brief verbal confrontation. The situation was quickly resolved without further consequences, but the encounter raised eyebrows within the Egyptian camp, as incidents like this can affect the team's emotional state ahead of kickoff.
Predicted Lineups
📋 Predicted starting XI Australia: Beach - Herrington, Souttar, Circati - Behich, Irvine, O'Neill, Bos - Metcalfe, Vólpato - Irankunda
📋 Predicted starting XI Egypt: Shobeir - Hafez, Rabia, Ibrahim, Hany - Attia, Saber - Zico, Ashour, Salah - Marmoush
🟨 Yellow Cards
Total yellow cards under 3.5 at 1.85* is one of the most reliable bets available for this match. In Australia's World Cup matches that line has landed six times in the last seven. The Socceroos rarely end up in card chaos. And at this tournament in general, referees have been relatively lenient, letting games flow unless they get out of hand.
⚽ Goals Prediction
The bookmakers aren't expecting many goals, but Egypt's stats tell a different story. They scored and conceded in every group game - at least two goals in each match. Australia aren't a side that shuts up completely either, and can hurt teams on the counter as they showed against Turkey. Total goals over 1.5 at 2.25* looks like an interesting option here.
👀 If the Match Doesn't Go as Planned
A low-event match can't be ruled out either. Both sides want to reach the Round of 16, and one mistake could send either team home. Australia won't open up without reason, and Egypt can play pragmatically when they need to. If it stays 0-0 for a long stretch, both sides will take fewer and fewer risks. Total goals under 1.5 at 2.42 works in that scenario.
🚩 Corner Prediction
Australia's corners over 3.5 at 1.68* is worth a look. Set pieces could be one of Australia's main weapons - all their starting centre-backs are 190cm or taller, with Harry Souttar approaching two metres. Egypt have no comparable aerial advantage, averaging around 181cm across the squad. Popovic's side may deliberately look to win corners and exploit that height advantage in the air.
🚀 Player Stat Bet
Omar Marmoush has been one of Egypt's standout players at this World Cup - particularly impressive against New Zealand. But his goal contribution column still reads zero, despite showing the activity and involvement that usually produces more. It's only a matter of time before that changes, and Australia's defence has vulnerabilities that could be the trigger. Marmoush to score or assist at 2.55*.
😱 Risky Bet
Two of Egypt's three group games ended 1-1, and even the New Zealand match could have gone the same way if the Oceanian side hadn't faded physically in the closing stages. Egypt score regularly but also give up chances consistently. Australia are a level below the Africans but not dramatically so. Draw and both teams to score at 4.60* for the risk-takers.
🎯 Safe Bet
For something safer: Egypt total fouls over 9.5 at 1.29*. Egypt play physically and regularly cross that mark - at least ten fouls in 9 of their last 10 official matches. Against Belgium they reached 15.
*Odds are approximate and may vary across different bookmakers.
