Serie A is the elite championship of Italian football

Serie A is undoubtedly one of the best football leagues in the world. This championship, representing the elite professional football competition in Italy, was founded in 1898. Since then, Serie A has become Italian football's true symbol and ranks third in the world's football leagues. Each season in Serie A, the teams compete against each other, playing 38 matches, one home and one away, totaling 380 exciting matches. A team is awarded 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and, unfortunately, 0 for a defeat. If the teams have the same number of points, the number of wins, goal difference, and other criteria become decisive.

Who is the most victorious team in Serie A?

As of 2023, Juventus are the all-time leaders in Serie A, having won 36 titles. The last time they lifted the trophy was in 2021, defeating Inter Milan in the standings. But apart from them, the names of clubs such as AC Milan, Inter Milan, AS Roma, Lazio, and Napoli shine brightly in the history of the championship. These teams do not just participate in the championship, they shape its face and dictate the terms.

League schedule for the upcoming season

There will be 20 teams competing in the season. These are the 17 best teams from last season and 3 teams that have been promoted from Serie B. Among the newcomers to the league are teams such as Cagliari, Genoa, and Frosinone, who are ready to show their best football in the main arena of the country.

How to qualify for Serie A and European tournaments?

In Serie A, Italy's top football league, teams compete for the national title and place in European tournaments. Here's how the European competition spots are allocated:

The teams that finish 1st to 4th in Serie A directly qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage. The 5th-placed team qualifies for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League, while the 6th-placed team starts participating in the play-off stage. In addition, the 7th-placed team starts participating in the UEFA Conference League from the play-off stage. However, there are special cases to consider. If the Italian Cup winner takes one of the first seven places in Serie A, the next team after 7th place also qualifies for the UEFA Conference League.

In addition, each season, the last three teams in Serie A are relegated, while the top three teams from Serie B are promoted and start their Serie A challenge.

Serie A stars

Serie A is renowned for its talented players. For Serie A, the all-time record holder is Silvio Piola, with 274 goals, all of which he scored for several teams, including Lazio, Torino, Pro Vercelli, Roma, and Novara. And for example, Cristiano Ronaldo set the record for the most goals scored in a single season with 31 goals in the 2018-2019 season. He is also the only player to win the league's top scorer award in four different seasons.

The overall prize pool for the Serie A for the season is projected to be close to €1.5 billion. The team that secures the first position in Serie A will receive a prize money of €23.4 million.
