Higgins hardly needs an introduction at this point. At 51, the Scotsman remains one of the trickiest opponents on the snooker circuit. Over the past few seasons, John’s game has barely changed-his positional play is still superb, he rarely gifts away easy chances, and he forces his rivals to fight tooth and nail for every single frame.

That said, it’s no longer accurate to label Higgins as purely a defensive player. Whenever the opportunity arises, John can still clinch a frame in a single visit. This balance is precisely what allows him to consistently reach the business end of major tournaments. There’s another interesting angle here: at the end of last season, Lisowski managed to edge out Higgins in the Welsh Open semi-finals, winning 6-5. It was a tense battle, with Jack sealing victory with a decisive break in the final frame. It’s unlikely John has forgotten that slip-up, so there’s definitely some extra motivation for him going into this clash. 

Lisowski have already played their opening match in Shanghai, leaving a positive impression. The Englishman saw off Zhang Anda with a 6-4 victory, stringing together some impressive breaks throughout the contest. For a debut performance, that’s a highly convincing start-Jack has clearly settled in quickly.

In general, when Lisowski keeps his composure and doesn’t force the issue, he’s capable of causing problems for anyone on tour. The pace at which Jack racks up breaks remains among the best in the game. That said, when facing Higgins, attacking snooker alone is rarely enough.

This one feels like it will come down to patience. If Jack starts chasing difficult pots when there’s a simpler option, John is sure to capitalise. But if Lisowski can maintain the same discipline he showed against Zhang, this match could easily go down to the wire.
