🔊 In Ufa, two teams meet who have found their form almost in unison after a string of disappointing results. Salavat Yulaev bounced back from painful defeats to Barys and Ak Bars with back-to-back wins, conceding just one goal across those games. Metallurg also recovered quickly after their slip-up against Avangard and head to Bashkortostan on the back of two straight victories. Adding extra intrigue to this matchup: four of the last five head-to-head clashes between these sides have been decided beyond regulation time.

60 minutes often aren’t enough for them.

📊 This summer, these rivals already had a chance to size each other up, with Metallurg edging the contest in overtime (3-2) after a goalless opening period. In last season’s regular campaign, the sides split their four head-to-head meetings, with three of those games going beyond regulation to determine a winner. Metallurg also claimed the most recent encounter, again prevailing in overtime (2-1). As for goal totals, there’s no clear trend here: these matchups can turn into tight defensive battles or erupt into high-scoring affairs with as many as ten goals on the board.

Salavat have found the right balance

Salavat’s start to the season has hardly been smooth, but the team have managed to pick up points in five of their first six games. Their toughest stretch came against Barys and Ak Bars: first, Salavat conceded eight goals in a wild 6-8 defeat, then squandered a three-goal lead to lose to Kazan in overtime (3-4). The response was immediate. They shut out Neftekhimik (2-0), and then Viktor Kozlov’s side ended Spartak’s winning streak with a 3-1 victory. Across those two games, Ufa allowed just one goal.

The clash with Spartak was particularly telling in terms of performance. Salavat outshot their opponents 27-20, spent 14:40 in the offensive zone compared to Spartak’s 8:55, and controlled almost the entire third period, keeping the visitors at arm’s length. Despite eight penalty minutes for the Muscovites, Salavat failed to capitalize on the power play-a point Kozlov attributed to Spartak’s awkward defensive structure when shorthanded. Still, the coach was pleased with his team’s battles and off-the-puck work-areas the staff had emphasized after those disappointing stretches against Barys and Ak Bars, aiming for a consistent level across all 60 minutes. Maksim Kuznetsov is fit again and eager to return, but Kozlov said he’ll make a decision on the lineup for Metallurg later; Gorshkov and Kuzmin remain sidelined with injuries.

Metallurg are gaining momentum as their matches progress.

Magnitogorsk have claimed victory in five of their last seven games, dropping points only once in regulation-a 2-3 loss to Spartak. Their other defeat came in overtime against Avangard, a contest where Metallurg were clearly second-best in expected goals (2.1 to 3.8) and shots on target (22 to 46). Following that setback, Andrei Razin’s side bounced back with wins over Barys and Neftekhimik. Against the Astana club, defensive solidity paved the way for a 3-0 shutout, while the clash with Neftekhimik showcased their offensive prowess-Metallurg netted five goals for the first time this season.

The most recent outing, however, began quite differently. After the opening period, Magnitogorsk trailed Neftekhimik 1-2 and were behind on shots (8 to 14). But after the intermission, they dramatically upped the tempo. Just 50 seconds into the second period, Todd leveled the score, Korotkov put the hosts ahead, and Nechayev finished off a counterattack from the fourth line-three goals in the middle frame completely turned the game around. In the third, Metallurg capitalized on their first power play opportunity, with the special teams needing just 22 seconds to convert. Another goal was waved off after a video review due to offside, leaving the final score at 5-2.

In the recent clash with Spartak, Vyazovoy allowed just one goal on 20 shots, with head coach Viktor Kozlov highlighting his impact during stretches when the defense was under heavy pressure.

For Metallurg, Alexander Smolin has seen the bulk of action in net, featuring in six games for a total of 302 minutes and 32 seconds. ⭐️ Editorial Prediction

Salavat Yulaev have secured their last two wins in disciplined fashion, but earlier games showed just how quickly things can get out of hand: clashes with Barys and Ak Bars both saw the five-goal mark surpassed. In Ufa, a similar pattern emerged in two of the last three head-to-head meetings with Metallurg.

Magnitogorsk further strengthens the case for goals. Over their last seven outings, Metallurg have scored 20 times in regulation while conceding 12, and in their most recent game, they hit five goals for the first time this season. Notably, they netted four against Neftekhimik after the first intermission alone. We don’t need another goal-fest for this bet to land. My pick is over 4.5 total goals.
