9z vs paiN Prediction 12 August 2026
🔊 The South American derby kicks off right in the opening round of the group stage, and the teams’ status has shifted dramatically over the past six months. 9z, after a remarkable run, no longer look like an underdog squad hoping to make some noise against the giants. With a Major playoff appearance, statement wins over Vitality and The MongolZ, and a championship run at the XSE Pro League Guangzhou, this roster now commands real respect. PaiN arrive at EWC without that level of silverware, but it’s far too soon to count the Brazilians out in this derby. At BLAST Bounty, they dispatched both Gentle Mates and NiP before pushing Astralis to the limit in a tight series. On top of that, these two teams know each other inside out, so springing a surprise with basic setups is going to be a real challenge.
Head-to-Head
Although these current lineups have only faced each other once, there’s already some history to build on. Their sole head-to-head came at the end of March during the FERJEE In House event, where 9z came out on top with a 2-1 victory. They opened with a 13-8 win on Dust2, stumbled to a 6-13 loss on Nuke, but then sealed the series by taking Inferno 13-9. Even back then, the difference in firepower was clear-max’s squad looked far more lively and aggressive on the server compared to their Brazilian counterparts.
Head-to-head statistics 9z - paiN

9z Team Overview
9z have had such a strong first half of the year that calling them a “dark horse” now feels off. Back in Astana, they turned heads with wins over Falcons and MOUZ, then powered their way into the Major playoffs, taking down the likes of Vitality and The MongolZ along the way. After Cologne, they headed to China and claimed the first international LAN title in the organization’s history. And it wasn’t some fluke run at XSE: their group stage was rocky, with losses to EYEBALLERS and Alliance, but once they found their rhythm, there was no stopping them. They swept MIBR 2-0, edged out TYLOO 2-1, got their revenge on Alliance, and then steamrolled PARIVISION in the final. Mirage 13:9, Inferno 13:10, Dust2 13:4-Jame and company barely had a chance to get going before it was over.
Right now, 9z have plenty of firepower. Dgt remains the veteran core of this lineup, HUASOPEEK consistently delivers highlight plays, and meyern looks comfortable on the international stage with the AWP in hand. This squad isn’t afraid to play aggressively against tier-one opposition, and while that used to cost them dearly, their trades are now much more effective. The only question left is whether they can maintain this form after a month-long break-since China, 9z haven’t played any official matches.

paiN Team Overview
With paiN, it's increasingly unclear what direction the organization is taking. Not long ago, the focus was on developing young, up-and-coming talent. But the decision to bring in saffee raises plenty of questions. Back with MIBR, he hadn’t shown the kind of form that would justify turning to a 31-year-old AWPer. V$M and piriajr also look like players who can put up numbers at the tier-2 or tier-3 level, but struggle when faced with top-tier opposition. Even biguzera, who for years earned deserved praise for his individual skill while calling the shots, isn’t able to shoulder the same load anymore. When a team starts to resemble a sinking ship, trying to patch up macro issues, make calls, and win duels all at once becomes nearly impossible.
The results speak for themselves-paiN manage to drop series against Sharks and Phantom, and at major events, they seem more focused on avoiding early exits than actually contending for playoff spots. Right now, this feels like the sunset of yet another paiN lineup. Their aim has dropped off, the captain is stretched thin across the map, and recent roster moves haven’t provided any real spark. There’s little confidence in this current roster: they might be able to scrape together a few rounds, but over the course of a series against an in-form 9z, they look clearly outmatched.

⭐ Editor’s Prediction
Based on their current form, 9z have rightfully climbed higher in the rankings. Over the past few months, they've transformed from a middling side into a world top-7 contender, capturing an international LAN title and then enjoying ample time to rest and prepare for the EWC. That’s too long a stretch of strong results to chalk up to just a lucky run. Still, it’s tough to back a clean sweep in this matchup. PaiN are well-acquainted with their rivals, already taking Nuke off them earlier this year, and they head into the tournament with recent official matches under their belt-while 9z haven't played for nearly a month. This one looks primed to go over 20.5 rounds, especially considering that in their last head-to-head, two out of three maps followed that pattern. If you’re picking a winner, though, 9z are the more convincing side at the moment. South American showdowns rarely stick to the rankings, but right now max and his crew look sharper and more confident on the server. Our prediction: over 20.5 rounds, with an alternative pick being a 9z win.
