Champions League football returns this week for the Round of 16 first leg, and as always, intriguing fixtures await us on Tuesday.
Real Madrid will host city rivals, Atletico Madrid, as Arsenal and PSV are set to dig it out in the Netherlands. These fixtures are tricky, but their previous results in this competition during the League Phase gave us an insight into how many goals each team can score in the upcoming games.

We think Aston Villa will go through to the next round, having made some interesting signings in January. However, Villa somewhat struggles away from home, and with Club Brugge playing their best football in front of their fans, there’s a giant chance the visitors would struggle to get the win. Both teams met in the league phase, and Club Brugge won, but the Belgians are meeting a entirely different Villa team, and we expect high-pressing football from both teams. Club Brugge scored twice in their last five UCL home matches, and we think Villa can score as much, thanks to Rashford and Asensio’s combo.

Dortmund vs Lille

- Dortmund have been winning matches lately, and if there’s a game they have to stay utterly focused on, then it’s their home UCL game against struggling Lille.
Dortmund are fond of scoring many goals when they host a UCL match, and with Lille struggling to keep their defense in order, there’s a giant chance the Yellow and Blacks will score three or more goals. Dortmund scored 3+ goals in five of their last eight UCL matches, so we think they can repeat the same without keeping a clean sheet.

PSV vs Arsenal

- PSV have underperformed lately, failing to win winnable matches in their division. Their misery will continue against Arsenal, who are the favorites for this draw.
Arsenal will be without the likes of Bukayo Saka and some key players due to injury issues, and that’s one of the reasons why the Gunners will not go on a scoring spree in the Netherlands. PSV have performed well in the UCL, no doubt, and they eliminated Juventus in the playoff, but they will struggle to score more than one goal past Arsenal’s defense.

Real Madrid are fond of getting results out of nowhere in this competition, one of the weirdest teams in the Champions League. Real have one of the best attacks in the world, with the likes of Mbappe and Vinicius Jr available for selection, and backing them to put at least three goals past Atletico Madrid shouldn’t cause any hassle. The last time Real hosted ATM in the UCL, they won 3-0 in 2017. While we expect the Whites to replicate that score range, we think Diego Simeone’s side has the quality to pull a goal back.
