Premier League predictions: Round 33: 19/04-21/04

Chelsea will continue their push for a top-five finish in the Premier League this season when they face Fulham away from home in a London Derby this weekend. The Blues wasted two chances that could have put them in a better position in the top-five race when they settled for draws in winnable games against Brentford and Ipswich Town. Fulham are stronger than both teams, but can Enzo Maresca’s side put in a decent shift this Sunday and put their Champions League qualification hopes on track again? 

Manchester United will vie for a win when they host Wolves this weekend at Old Trafford. Yes, Man United are out of the race for a place in the top seven in the Premier League, but they need wins to build their momentum for the Europa League campaign. The Red Devils are winless in their last two league matches (1D, 1L), and a win over the Wanderers will not only lift the mood in the dressing room but also ease the tension over Ruben Amorim, whose stats aren’t one of the best in the history of the club.

We analysed this week’s Premier League fixtures and found the best possible outcomes for each match.

On average, Brentford broke the offside rule 2.4 times per game in their last five meetings with the Seagulls, and with Wissa and Mbuemo expected to bolster the hosts’ attack, we can count on the hosts to be flagged for offside at least three times.

West Ham to win many throw-ins: West Ham United vs Southampton

• West Ham win many throw-ins when they play against Southampton, and there’s a decent chance the Saints will struggle to maintain possession in London this weekend.

West Ham and Southampton have a long list of Premier League meetings, but we found something intriguing in their last five encounters. The Hammers won 90 throw-ins in their previous five showdowns with Southampton, on average, 18 throw-ins per game. The Saints struggle to retain possession, so we can count on the hosts to win at least 18 throw-ins this weekend.

Manchester City to continue their fine form at Goodison Park: Everton vs Manchester City

• Everton may have pulled off some decent performances recently, but they fall short when they host Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola is anxious to wrap up what many have described as a "horrendous’ season with a top-five finish and possibly the FA Cup trophy, so winning games like this should be on the Spaniard’s wishlist. Everton may have held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw in this venue some weeks ago, but they are tipped to fall short against City, who won their last seven Premier League trips to Goodison Park under Guardiola. The bookies identify them as the favourites to win the game, and we agree with them.

Everton vs Manchester City prediction: Away team to win

Bournemouth will be cautioned a few times: Crystal Palace vs Bournemouth

• Only a few Premier League teams have committed more fouls than Bournemouth this season, and it’s no surprise we are banking on them to get cautioned by the centre referee this weekend.

Crystal Palace and Bournemouth are no strangers in this competition, having shared the pitch many times. However, the Cherries committed several rash tackles that led to yellow cards in their last five meetings with the Eagles. The visitors received 14 yellow cards in their last five league meetings with Crystal Palace, averaging 2.8 warnings per game. Palace were trounced 5-0 last time out by Newcastle Utd, so we expect them to show a positive character this weekend and, as a result, make swift attacks that will be too hard for the visitors to control. Backing Bournemouth to receive at least two yellow cards is decent, but we want a stretch by asking for at least three at Selhurst Park.

Aston Villa and Newcastle United will entertain fans with goals: Aston Villa vs Newcastle United

Newcastle United have dominated these meetings recently, winning five of their last six encounters, although most of those wins took place at St James’ Park. If their last five meetings ended with 3+ goals, then there’s a big chance the upcoming game will follow suit, as Marcus Rashford and Asensio will look to remain a threat in the opposition box, while Konsa and Disasi will watch out for Isak and Harvey Barnes, who has contributed five goals in his last five league games.

Arsenal to bounce back to winning ways: Ipswich Town vs Arsenal

Arsenal won the reverse fixture 1-0, and while we agreed that the Gunners have lost the Premier League title race to Liverpool, we don’t think they will take this game lightly because they have not entirely qualified for Champions League football next season. Ipswich are hoping to avoid relegation this term but are 14 points away from safety. If they lose this tie and West Ham and Wolves win their games, then their relegation to the Championship will be confirmed. It is an important game for both teams, but the Gunners will come away with the win, having won eight of their nine league encounters.

Ipswich Town vs Arsenal prediction: Away team to win

Corner kicks will come in excess: Manchester United vs Wolves

• Both teams effortlessly win corner kicks when they cross paths, and the weekend encounter doesn’t look any different.

Manchester United may have lost just once in their nine home league games against Wolves in the Premier League, but their involvement in the Europa League casts doubt they can win this game. However, we looked at their duties from the flank and saw that both teams combined produced 58 corners in their last five meetings at Old Trafford, averaging 11.60 corners per game. We can count on both clubs to win at least 10 corners this weekend.

Manchester United vs Wolves prediction: Total corners – over 9.5

Fulham’s goalie will be called into action a few times: Fulham vs Chelsea

• Fulham’s goalies are usually tested a lot when they host Chelsea, and we expect the same this weekend.

Chelsea are fighting for a top-five finish this term, and a win over Fulham will do them good, given that they dropped points in their last two games against Brentford and Ipswich Town. Chelsea may have lost the reverse tie, but the Blues enjoy coming up against the Cottagers away from home. We looked at Chelsea’s previous matches at Craven Cottage and saw that Enzo Maresca’s side lost just once in 12 matches, with the defeat taking place in 2023. Chelsea may be fighting for Champions League places and seeking revenge for the defeat to Fulham in the reverse fixture, but we cannot afford to forget that they have been inconsistent this year. We looked at Fulham’s goalies’ previous performances at Craven Cottage and saw that they made 27 saves in five matches, 5.4 saves per game on average. We feel it is rather safe to back the hosts’ goalie to make at least five saves this weekend.

Liverpool will bounce back to winning ways in style: Leicester City vs Liverpool

Liverpool are two matches away from winning the Premier League title with four matches to spare. Leicester are 18 points off safety, and a defeat to the Reds will be the final nail in the coffin for the Foxes. Van Nistelrooy’s side lost 22 of their 32 matches, and expecting anything other than a defeat from the hosts is another form of delusion. Arne Slot’s side won their last four league meetings with Leicester. Their last three wins against this side ended with 3+ goals, so we expect an entertaining victory for the visitors this Sunday.

Tottenham and Nottingham will exchange goals: Tottenham vs Nottingham Forest

• Nottingham Forest may be in the top four, but they struggle against Tottenham. This encounter will be entertaining.

Tottenham have a good record against the Tricky Trees, winning four of their last five league games. However, the hosts are in dire form, unlike the visitors. We dare not back Spurs for the win, but thanks to their home advantage, we can expect a goal from them, with the visitors likely to do the same.
