Enchanted Grass

The latest Grand Slam tournament has concluded. Wimbledon has crowned its champion and passed the baton to the US OPEN. The tournament left mixed impressions and was full of various emotions: we witnessed victories, disappointments, and even tragedies. Many will prefer to forget the event in the UK, while others, on the contrary, will remember it for a long time. The Scores24 editorial team has selected interesting moments from the grass-court slam and invites you to take a look at them. Let's go!
Wouldn't Have Been Superfluous
The career status of Australian Nick Kyrgios remains unclear. The tennis player questioned its continuation after his defeat at the Australian Open, but he played in the States at the Masters and even secured one victory. Nick intended to play at Wimbledon, but unfortunately, his health did not allow it. He withdrew from the tournament in June. Kyrgios is undoubtedly a gifted player who has not fully realized his potential. Our editorial team urges not to forget about him and hopes that the Australian will find the strength to continue playing. Without him, the tour has become duller.
Didn't Play, But Didn't Really Want To
Casper Ruud is a high-profile tennis player. The Norwegian has many titles and Grand Slam finals to his name. However, he is far from being proficient on grass courts and plays at a top-100 world ranking level on them. Ruud usually comes to Wimbledon for the paycheck, but this time he left without one. He withdrew due to a knee injury, and it's unclear if he was very upset or not. Casper has already earned several million dollars in his career, so it probably won't affect him much.
Disappointments
This year's Wimbledon is unique in its nature. The tournament immediately started eliminating seeded players. No one expected that 13 leading male tennis players would exit in the first round. Watching this was quite strange. Denis Shapovalov, for example, complained about the slow grass after losing to clay-courter Mariano Navone, and some simply didn't finish their matches – we're talking, of course, about Stefanos Tsitsipas. We will focus more on two players who appeared in our article about the French Open. These guys provide strong informational reasons, and their results are impossible to ignore. If Lorenzo Musetti stays high in the rankings for a long time, believe us, he will also have a separate section in our article.
Daniil Medvedev
If it weren't for the tournament in Halle, Germany, before Wimbledon, we wouldn't have remembered the Russian. Medvedev indeed showed excellent tennis before the grass-court slam, and in Halle, he reached the final, where he lost to Alexander Bublik, but before that, he managed to defeat Alexander Zverev. His form proved deceptive, and in the first round, Daniil delivered another performance, unfortunately, once again from the negative side.
Benjamin Bonzi was the one who knocked Medvedev out of the tournament draw. The Frenchman was never a grass-court specialist, yet he played an incredible match. The former world number one couldn't do anything on the return, although it seemed Daniil could come back at any moment. We won't continue describing the details of this match, let's just note the fact: Daniil Medvedev once again exited a major tournament in the first round.
What can be done about it? Probably nothing. Daniil is 29 years old, and as strange as it may sound, his best years are behind him. The tour has seen the arrival of fast, audacious players who are keen on development. What Daniil demonstrates is up to your imagination. We would be delighted if the player manages to revive his career, but the chances are slim.
Alexander Zverev
When we summed up Roland Garros and did not predict success for Sasha on grass, we did not know it would end so poorly. Wimbledon has never been Zverev's favorite tournament, but no one expected it to send him home after the first round.
Arthur Rinderknech knocked out the star tennis player. Tennis and betting enthusiasts are surely aware of how the Frenchman plays, making this victory all the more unexpected. The match lasted five sets and nearly five hours, and someone became six times richer. That was the odds for the Frenchman's victory.
Formally, nothing terrible happened, as Zverev does not often lose in the early rounds like his "comrade" Medvedev. However, the post-match interview sparked a wave of reflection. One of the statements: "I don't think tennis is the problem for me right now. It's about something else. But something in me needs to change, and not necessarily on the tennis court. Perhaps, for the first time in my life, I need a sports psychologist. It's funny, sometimes I feel very lonely. I have psychological difficulties. I don't know. It's hard for me to find joy outside the tennis court right now." The musings of armchair analysts about Alexander Zverev's mental state are officially confirmed; the player indeed has this problem, and the main thing is that he understands it himself.
Perhaps this interview will give Zverev a certain push. Tennis is an individual sport, and progress is particularly noticeable here. With proper work with a psychologist, Alexander has a chance to aim for more, and the only such goal left is a Grand Slam. Unrealistic, you say? They said the same about Jannik Sinner about 5 years ago. And with that, we end the disappointments and move on.
Something to Think About
In this section, we would like to talk about players who cannot be classified as sensations or disappointments. These tennis players showed mixed results but are clearly capable of more. We cannot know how their careers will progress, but the potential of these guys should not be underestimated.
Alexander Bublik
In the world of betting, Alexander has been nicknamed the "bet killer." Every player who bets on tennis has their own stop-list of whom they will never wager money on. And if that's you, then Bublik is surely on your list. After the end of the French Open, it seemed like it was time for something new, as the Russian tennis player with a Kazakh passport played excellently. Moreover, as you have already read above, Bublik won the tournament in Halle, but alas, fans were met with bitter disappointment in the first round of Wimbledon. Alexanderin an utterly unimaginable way lost to Jaume Munar in five sets. Could the fairy tale have ended so quickly?
In reality, everything is quite clear with Bublik. Alexander is a sincere and talkative person, as evidenced by his few interviews. These character traits are reflected on the court. If the tennis player wants to continue showing results, we will find out very soon. If not, we will witness the old good Bublik, who just wants to put on a show and can lose to any opponent.
Andrey Rublev
The Russian is a person very passionate about his work. Sometimes excessively so. In recent years, tennis has consumed Andrey, and his results have significantly declined. At some point, there were too many unpleasant incidents involving him. Rublev would get frustrated and break rackets, but invariably lost important matches.
Wimbledon 2025 possibly gave "Ruble" fans hope for the better. It's no secret that the tennis player is actively working with a psychologist, and the results are already visible. We no longer see aggression on the court, and the player's tennis is getting closer to quality.
We can only speculate what would have happened if Andrey hadn't made a double fault on the break point of the eighth game of the second set. He was genuinely playing on equal terms with Carlos Alcaraz until that moment. Rublev won the first set in a tiebreak and was showing good play. But after that double fault, the tennis player never returned to the match, and his renowned opponent needed only a minimal number of breaks for the final victory. Nerves decided everything, but we saw a light at the end of the tunnel. And that's great.
Breakthroughs
As we emphasized earlier, the tournament was full of upsets. Many favorites were knocked out early, but this section of the article wasn't easy to fill with information. Why? It's clear. The players who knocked out the top seeds didn't go far. Take, for example, Arthur Rinderknech: after eliminating Alexander Zverev, he ended his run at the round of 16. The tennis players who defeated significant opponents didn't advance far. But we will still fill this section.
Flavio Cobolli
The Italian is an interesting phenomenon in the world tour. Initially positioned as a pure clay-courter, this is no longer the case. Cobolli is improving on all surfaces each season, and at Wimbledon 2025, he made a splash by reaching the quarterfinals, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. This result might be due to the draw, but we shouldn't underestimate the player's achievements. He managed to defeat tough opponents and deservedly earned a solid boost in ranking points. Flavio's aggressive style is not a new chapter in tennis history, but he has already added his own flair to the world tour. We will continue to watch him.
Karen Khachanov
The Russian is regularly mentioned in our articles. This fact should not surprise anyone, as there aren't many stable tennis players. The men's tour is known for its high competition, and we mean the battle to reach the third or fourth round of a tournament.Grand Slam. At Wimbledon 2025, Karen not only achieved his usual result but even exceeded expectations.
Karen Khachanov reached the quarterfinals on the grass courts, matching his best result in Britain. The tennis player displayed excellent tennis, focusing on his usual power, and was somewhat aided by the draw, which eliminated more top-ranked opponents. The Russian player's journey ended with a match against Taylor Fritz, where there were chances to hold on, but either the mindset was lacking, or he simply ran out of energy. It was at the quarterfinal stage that Khachanov delivered his weakest match of the tournament, showing probably only 40 percent of his capabilities. Ahead lies the US OPEN. Do you think Khachanov will earn a place in the next article?
Tragedy
Unfortunately, Wimbledon did not go without sad stories. This often happens at major tournaments, and the event in Britain was no exception. We chose only two players who have been friends for a long time but have different stories. Probably, it's no secret who we are talking about.
Grigor Dimitrov
A time machine would have been useful in this case. It's interesting to think about what would have happened if the Bulgarian hadn't gotten injured in the match against Jannik Sinner. At the time the match ended, Grigor was leading 2-0, and his Italian opponent hadn't managed to do anything on the court.
Unfortunately, Grigor is ending yet another tournament prematurely, but it probably never felt as disappointing as this. The tennis player was completely outplaying the world number one and was one set away from a sensation, but fate played a cruel joke. That evening, tears were not only shed by Grigor Dimitrov but by everyone who supports competitive sports.
Novak Djokovic
Why did we include the legend in this section? The loss to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals brought many sad emotions. Let's be objective – Novak was crushed in this match. Yes, the Serb was not entirely healthy, but that changes nothing, as age is catching up with him. It's likely that the top two "Nole" will not win anything more, and there are doubts about his return to Wimbledon, although he is still capable of making it to the quarterfinals.
Will Novak Djokovic follow the path of Nadal and Federer? Our prediction is no. The Serb has a completely different character, loves spending time with his family, and sees no need to suffer on the court when he leaves the top ten. And he will leave it, make no mistake, as time spares no one. This great tennis player has already won his titles. We think the legend will retire at the end of the season without any unnecessary pompous events. But we would be happy to be wrong in our assumptions.
Front-row seats are taken for a long time
This is very symbolic. In 2025, Wimbledon was won by players who were involved in doping scandals. Unfortunately, this is the state of current tennis. The fairness of Jannik Sinner's punishment is a topic for a separate article. What do you think, should the Italian have participated in this tournament?
Be that as it may, Jannik Sinner is the Wimbledon 2025 champion, and CarlosAlcaraz has relinquished his powers. We witnessed a repeat of the RG 2025 final, but the new storyline was much less exciting than the previous one. The tennis players spent only 4 sets on the court, taking 3 hours and 6 minutes.
It was an average-class match on grass. Jannik and Carlos are capable of playing much more brightly. The most interesting part was the first set, where the Spaniard turned the segment in his favor. However, the two serves that Sinner gave away in the first segment turned out to be his only failures for the entire match. After that, the Italian was unstoppable. He made confident breaks on his opponent's serve and gave no chances on his own. It seemed that Alcaraz had expended less energy in the previous rounds than his opponent, but this is professional sports. You can never be 100% sure of anything here.
P.S
We have passed the grass season, and perhaps it is for the best. Wimbledon turned out to be strange: it offered surprises but no breakthroughs, the leaders were eliminated, yet the finalists remained the same. And the champion, associated with scandal, does not inspire much optimism, to say the least. Next, the world tour moves to a new location, with the American series approaching. The last Grand Slam of the year kicks off at the end of August. What it will be like, only time will tell, and we will see you in the next articles. See you on Scores24!
