Is the W Series still going?

09 Feb, 13:35

The W Series, which was inaugurated in 2019, was an all-female single-seater motor racing championship set up to advertise women in motorsport. It was also a platform for women to showcase their driving skills at a high level, using identical sports cars.

However, so many things didn’t go as planned, as what could have been a great opportunity for women to draw comparisons with men in this sport turned into a chain of broken dreams.

Scores24 shared some key details concerning the W Series down below.

Is the W Series still going?

Sadly, the W Series racing is not still going, and this is why. The all-female single-seater racing encountered complex financial situations, which eventually led to the cancellation of the remaining two rounds of the 2022 season. Despite the cancellation, the W Series was still able to identify its champion – Jamie Chadwick – as the points the British racer had were enough to claim what was her third title in a row.

When was the W Series established?

The W Series, also known as the all-female single-seater, was inaugurated in 2019, but the championship took a break in the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the tournament resumed in 2021 and continued in 2022 under Formula 1’s support bill, with Britain’s Jamie Chadwick winning all three times between 2019, 2021, and 2022.

Who are the W Series winners?

The W Series may have lasted for three years, but it boasts only one winner – Britain’s Jamie Chadwick, who won the tournament three times in a row. Although the 2022 championship had two rounds left, the points Jamie Chadwick had already accrued were enough for her to be declared the winner for the third time, ahead of Alice Powell, who finished in 2nd place, and 3rd twice in three years.

Will the W Series return in the future?

There hasn’t been any clear indication that the W Series racing will return in the future, although it will be unwise to write the competition off. However, in 2023, the directors of the sport had several talks with different parties in an attempt to restore the W Series, but sadly, those discussions did not end well.

Ley said in 2023: "The company had been unable to commit to the 2023 race season due to its liquidity position. The directors had been in discussions with various parties to provide additional funding together with a potential sale of the business.

"Unfortunately, these discussions did not progress."
