The new UEFA Champions League campaign gets under way on September 8, with Europe's biggest clubs once again gathering on the continent's leading stages. When Was the Champions League Created and How Has the Format Changed?

The competition dates back to 1955, when the European Cup was founded following a proposal by French journalist Gabriel Hanot. In the early editions, only national league champions took part and the tournament used a traditional knockout format.

A major turning point came in the early 1990s. The 1991/1992 season was the last under the old name, but it was also the first to feature a group stage. From the 1992/1993 season, the competition was officially renamed the UEFA Champions League. The new identity also brought other changes, including a new logo and anthem.

The format continued to evolve after that:

• 1997/1998 — the field expanded to 24 teams, while clubs finishing second in their domestic leagues were also allowed to enter alongside national champions.
• 1999/2000 — the number of teams increased to 32, divided into eight groups.
• 2003/2004 — the second group stage was removed and replaced by the round of 16.
• 2024/2025 — the biggest reform in recent years increased the league phase to 36 teams and replaced the traditional group stage with a Swiss-style system. Each club now plays eight matches against different opponents before a single table is formed: the top eight qualify directly for the round of 16, while teams finishing from ninth to 24th enter the knockout play-offs.
