Portugal at the 2026 World Cup: Roster, Predictions, and Statistics

20 May, 09:57

The Portugal national team has possibly assembled the most star-studded team in recent years. At the European level, the Portuguese are consistently strong (in more than half of the continental championships in the 21st century, the "European Brazilians" were in the top 4). However, the World Championships have somehow eluded Cristiano Ronaldo and his team – the only medal the Portuguese have is from way back in 1966.

Bookmakers rank Portugal as the sixth favourite to win the World Cup. Roberto Martinez has already won World Cup medals with the Belgians, and now he is heading to the World Cup with the Portuguese for the first time. Let's examine the illustrious lineup of the fifth-ranked team in FIFA's world ranking and offer a forecast for their performance in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

In brief:

  • Portugal has only once in history won a World Cup medal – in 1966. In the European Championships during this period, Portugal has won medals five times.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo is heading to his sixth consecutive World Cup. This is a tournament record. Cristiano is 41 years old, he will become the second oldest player in World Cup history.
  • Also included in the Portugal squad are Bruno FernandesBernardo SilvaJoão FélixVitinhaNuno Mendes, while Antonio Silva, Danilo Pereira, and João Palhinha were left out of the squad.
  • Portugal is one of the few teams that included four goalkeepers in the tournament squad. Almost all teams will go to the 2026 World Cup with three goalkeepers.
  • Bookmakers estimate Portugal's chances of winning the World Cup at 8%, and their chances of reaching the final at 17%.
  • In the group stageIn the World Cup, the Portuguese national team will play against DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.

Portugal's Squad for the 2026 World Cup

Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa (Porto), José Sá (Wolverhampton), Rui Silva (Sporting), Ricardo Velho (Gençlerbirliği).

Defenders: Nuno Mendes (PSG), Diogo Dalot (Manchester United), Nelson Semedo (Fenerbahçe), João Cancelo (Barcelona), Gonçalo Inácio (Sporting), Renato Veiga (Villarreal), Ruben Dias (Manchester City), Tomás Araújo (Benfica).

Midfielders: Ruben Neves (Al Hilal), João Neves, Vitinha (both PSG), Samuel Costa (Mallorca), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Bernardo Silva, Matheus Nunes (both Manchester City).

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, João Félix (both Al Nassr), Rafael Leão (Milan), Francisco Trincão (Sporting), Pedro Neto (Chelsea), Francisco Conceição (Juventus), Gonçalo Guedes (Real Sociedad), Gonçalo Ramos (PSG).

Head Coach: Roberto Martinez

Main Star

Heading to his sixth and, presumably, last World Cup is Cristiano Ronaldo. Even at 41, the forward remains the center of attention, and in terms of becoming the tournament's top scorer, CR7 is only surpassed by six other players. Ronaldo's scoring record at World Cups is not impressive (only 8 goals in five tournaments), but even two goals in the upcoming tournament will put the Portuguese in the top 10 best scorers in World Cup history.

Main Problem of Portugal

For the past two decades, Portugal has been grappling with a major problem – the team's play is too focused on Ronaldo. But if before, national team coaches could emphasize Ronaldo's play and not fear misses, now, when the main star is 41, the risks are high. Difficulties may arise from Martinez's inability to get the most out of the star-studded squad and the pressure on both the coach and the players.

Young Talent

Surprisingly, the youngest member of the Portuguese squad will be João Neves, who has been conducting PSG's midfield for two years in a row and has played in the Champions League final for two years in a row. It's hard to perceive the 21-year-old Portuguese solely as a "young talent", considering that Neves has already played almost 200 matches at a professional level. Either way, Neves already knows how to handle the pressure of top matches, and there's almost no doubt about his appearance in the center of the field.

Who Will Miss the 2026 World Cup

For the Portuguese national team's coaching staff, the squad selection for a major tournament is always a headache. In any case, someone who has had a stable season will have to be left out. Thus, missing the World Cup will be those who fought for survival in the Premier League, Mateus Fernandes and João Palhinha, Antonio Silva, Pedro Gonçalves, as well as 19-year-olds Rodrigo Mora and Giovanni Quenda, for whom a trip to the World Cup, even as a reserve player, could be a good experience for the future. Martinez's decision to take four goalkeepers to the tournament, rather than three, leaving out one of the outfield players, seems surprising.

Portugal's form

Qualification

In the qualifying stage for the 2026 World Cup, the Portuguese team performed relatively evenly. Although they did not go without losing points, as Martinez's team only beat Armenia (5:0 and 9:1) twice, but had problems with Hungary (3:2 and 2:2), and Ireland (1:0 and 0:2). The routs of the Armenian team guaranteed the Portuguese decent performance indicators with 3.33 goals per game and 1.17 conceded.

Recent results

After the end of the qualification in the autumn of 2026, the Portuguese national team played two friendly matches away in March: they drew with Mexico (0:0) in Mexico City and beat USA (2:0) in Atlanta. Over the span of the last 11 games, the Portuguese have only lost once.

Preparation for the World Cup

Before flying to the 2026 World Cup games, the Portuguese will play two control matches in front of their fans: in Lisbon, Martinez's team will play against Chile (June 6), in Leiria – against Nigeria (June 10). The Portuguese have never lost to either the South American or African teams, conceding only once in three matches.

Why Portugal May Not Win the World Cup

Portugal will enter the World Cup with the strongest and most renowned squad they've had in decades. This could backfire – on a short run, teamwork is more important than the star power of the squad. But a much more serious problem could arise due to the influence of Cristiano Ronaldo. Martinez will have to make an important decision: to keep the 41-year-old forward at the center of the attack and attention throughout the game, or to adapt to the situation, accepting the possibility of negativity from him and the public.

Difficulties may also arise due to Martinez's style of play. With such a star-studded lineup in each line, the Spaniard allows himself to play open attacking football with 2.7 goals per game over a span of ten official matches. But the defense leaves much to be desired – over the same period, the not-so-top indicator is 1.3 conceded.

Finally, the third obstacle – pressure. The tournament can be seen as anything – as Ronaldo's last chance, as the main opportunity for the "star" lineup. But comparisons with Spain, France, Brazil and Argentina occur every tournament, although Portugal as a contender for the trophy was rarely considered seriously. In 2026 – everything is different.

Prediction for the Portugal National Team

The key match for the Portugal national team in the group stage will be the meeting with Colombia. Success almost certainly guarantees Ronaldo and his team a first round against Australia / Turkey / Ecuador / Senegal / Norway / Algeria / Panama, and a second round of playoffs – against Canada or Switzerland. The path to the quarterfinals looks simple.

A slip-up with the Latin Americans will send the Portuguese to another part of the bracket, where Croatia may fall in the 1/16 finals, and Spain in the ⅛. Considering that the match with the Colombians will close the group stage program, Portugal will be able to react to the outcome – a good goal difference will be enough even for a draw. The first place in the group will open the way to the quarterfinals, which should be the minimum task. The editorial choice – Portugal will reach the ¼ finals at 2.35*.

Additional choice – a goal by DR Congo in the opening match with odds of 1.87. Statistically, Portugal conceded in each of the first three matches at the World Cups, as well as in 11 out of 13 recent matches at the world championships and in 7 out of 8 opening games at major international tournaments (World Cup, Euro and Confederations Cup).
